EXPLORING JAZZ VIOLIN

by Chris Haigh

THE FIDDLE HANDBOOK

by Chris Haigh

OFF THE WALL (CD)

By Chris Haigh

In 2010 Chris Haigh wrote the haighly acclaimed "Exploring Jazz Violin", the first of seven fiddle books he has since written for Schott. In 2019 "Beginning Jazz Violin" was published, to concentrate on the basics of swing bowing, the use of scales and riffs in improvisation, and approaches to playing over a chord sequence. The book assumes only a very basic knowledge of theory, and takes a very straightforward nuts and bolts approach. To the outsider improvisation may appear to be magic, but this book de-mystifies every aspect of technique and theory, and leads the reader by careful steps through the early stages of mastering jazz violin.

CONTENTS:

  • 1. Getting started; the instrument and its parts. Strings, the bow, posture, general bowing technique, reading music, scales and fingering, intervals and chords.
  • 2. Playing with swing. Chain bowing and other swing bowing patterns, syncopation
  • 3. Starting to improvise. Phrasing, using pauses, simplicity and repetition, gapped scales, variation in note length, listening to the chords
